Our goal

The Giving Stump, LLC runs GivingStump: givingstump.com and the GivingStump apps for iPhone and Android. We want anyone to be able to post a tree job, compare bids and run a tree service business here, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, zoom or other assistive technology.

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and we are working toward it. We do not yet meet it everywhere, and the known gaps are listed below. This statement is our own assessment of our code; it is not the result of an independent audit.

What we do today

  • Our pages do not turn off pinch-zoom, so you can enlarge anything on screen.
  • Every page declares its language (English), so screen readers read it with the right pronunciation.
  • Our build fails if an image in our code has no alt attribute, though that check cannot tell whether the alt text describes the image well.
  • An automated check on every change blocks new buttons and links it can identify as smaller than 44 by 44 points on a phone.
  • The same check requires form fields to use text of at least 16 pixels on phones, so an iPhone does not zoom the page when you start typing.
  • We check text contrast on our main public pages with a script that measures it in a real browser against the WCAG 2.1 AA ratios: 4.5 to 1 for body text and 3 to 1 for large text.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, our animations and transitions finish instantly.

Known limitations

  • When you post a job, marking trees and the equipment access point on the satellite map works by tapping or clicking a spot on the map, which you cannot do with a keyboard or a screen reader. Both are optional: you can post a job without them.
  • The service-area map in contractor settings is a picture of your radius only. Set the radius with the slider or the mile buttons above the map, which work with a keyboard and a screen reader.
  • Measuring a tree with LiDAR works only in our iPhone app on iPhone Pro models, and it depends on pointing the camera at the tree. Measurements are optional.
  • Photos that homeowners upload are described to screen readers by the job name and a photo number or the kind of shot (for example, “Trunk base”), not by what each photo shows.
  • Documents that contractors upload, such as insurance certificates, are shown as uploaded. A scanned PDF may not be readable by a screen reader.
  • Our contrast check covers our main public pages, not every signed-in screen, and it cannot measure text placed on a gradient background.
  • Some parts of GivingStump come from other companies, such as Google Maps and the Stripe card form, and their accessibility is in those companies’ hands.

Tell us about a barrier

If something on GivingStump is hard or impossible for you to use, email support@givingstump.com or use our contact page. It helps to tell us the page or screen, what you were trying to do, and the device, browser or app and any assistive technology you use.

Our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy cover the rest of how GivingStump works.
